My thoughts...
When I thought about war previous to this assignment I thought of the many brave soldiers who risked their lives to go fight for their country. This assignment has opened my eyes to see war from a different perspective; in the shoes of an Australian woman. This research project has benefited me because I now have a deeper understanding of what war involves and affects.
I have come to understand that war didn't only affect those in the front lines but also those who were back home supporting them. I've never given a second thought to what happened at home and if life continued as it was. The women actually played a big part in helping the soldiers to survive by providing clothes, medical supplies and basic necessities. War effected everyone no matter where they were stationed, whether it was in the front lines, at the home front or behind the lines in hospitals.
The Great War left a massive footprint on the world. The way we do things have been altered and in my opinion for the better. Women are being treated equally and have right in society. Life wouldn't be this easy if it weren't for the changes and advancements that occurred during and after the war. I can’t imagine what life would be like; unfair, hard going, exhausting, sexist, always trying to be like Britain in the way we dress, talk and cook. Personally, although war is a negative there are many positive things that have come out of it.
I have truly admired and been inspired by some of the women’s stories of their hardship during the war. I was so amazed at Alice Ross-King’s story that I had to share it. She received 3 out of the 4 service medal in her time. She was one extraordinary, definitely not ordinary women. She must have faced some seriously difficult not to mention gruesome situations. These ladies have good qualities and I think this is why they are admired. Dedication, persistence, intelligent, forever caring and always loving are the qualities we should all aspire to have.
When I really think about war and its hardships I wouldn't want to be alive when it occurred. I don’t think I could deal with the emotional side of things. I understand that the ladies of World War 1 had this just thrown in their faces and they had to accept it and work with it. Life would have been stopped and out on hold; the thought of having a family or running business would totally be thrown out the window. So much work is required in preparing and going into war.
If we you think of all the advanced technology we have nowadays compared to what they would have had in the early 20th century. We are extremely fortunate that if a worldwide war broke out we would have a completely different experience. This is because there wouldn't be any hard man labor due to the invented machines that do all the work for us. My opinion is that there most likely will not be another worldwide war like World War 1 or World War 2. The only type of war I can think of is a nuclear war when someone pushed that ever so tempting red button.
In conclusion, war has its benefits and its disadvantages. Life will go on and there is no stopping it even if a massive worldwide war broke out in the 21st century.
